THE FILM THAT TURNS WHITE
by DONNA AND LUKE
First short film in Donna and Luke's series: "Is this a film?"
We're basically asking what is the difference between an image and a film? Or even video vs a film (or movie if you prefer). What is, and isn't a film?
Here, the 'story' plays with audience expectation. Does a film have to have a character? Maybe. Does it have to have change? Again, maybe. In this short, the title itself expects change, and therefore takes the audience on a journey, and therefore is a film. Maybe.
We're trying to reduce what makes a film down it's smallest element, and then rebuilding with what we've learnt along the way in what works best - and reducing what is actually just filler / useless in a film.
Thanks to James Dobson for the tune.

PRODUCED by HARRIET WALLACE-MEAD and LUKE JACOBSON
FEATURE FILM SET IN MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA.
“when you're in love with your best friend but you're pretty sure they don't feel the same way”.
“THE CHARACTERS HAVE DEPTH AND SHOW AN ALL-TOO-REAL TURBULENT RELATIONSHIP, WHICH IS REFRESHING IN A WORLD FILLED WITH PLASTIC ROMANTIC COMEDIES.” - APRIL SHEPHERD
Tomboy Cafe's barista, James (Matt Marasco), has been in love with his manager, Sarah (Tess Dobré), since they were kids, only he's never had the guts to tell her. Sarah has a lot of problems; problems that she mainly causes, and James knows that if she would only be with him, he could fix everything. Only problem is, Sarah doesn’t seem to feel the same way and loves him only as a friend. On top of that, Sarah isn't really the kind of girl who would rely on anyone to be her saviour.
We filmed on Panasonic GH4 to give it that real indie film vibe. Set amongst Melbourne’s famous coffee scene, we wanted to make it feel like it could have been shot by any camera and coffee and camera enthusiast that’s come in out of the cold for a cuppa, and witnessed the drama unfold within the cafe’s staff.

EDENCRAFT
WRITTEN and DIRECTED by LUKE JACOBSON
PRODUCED by JOSIE MAHER and LUKE JACOBSON
8 X 1/2 HR DOCUMENTARY SERIES (FOXTEL)
“A Documentary TV Series that explores the world of boat building and the hardcore fishermen that use them”.
“A GLIMPSE INTO WHAT IT TAKES TO BUILD THE VIRTUALLY INDESTRUCTIBLE OFFSHORE FISHING BOATS, AND THE MADHOUSE PEOPLE WHO USE THEM”
The two biggest challenges for us was in creating the drama within a brand-sponsored TV series. Generally drama in this field comes from the things that go wrong - but in following the Edencraft team as they took us through building a boat, we were limited to how much we could show going wrong. Being a half-million dollar custom boat, we couldn’t show too issues with any of the builds - as it would tarnish the reputation of the brand.
I instead focused on a more of a ‘how to’ model of storytelling for the sections of the episodes that were about the build - and brought the drama to the parts of the series that were about the expeditions we would go on. Here I had free reign to film it all. From battling giant sharks, the fatigue of shooting all day and overnight on some trips, to battling next morning hangovers - we captured it all.

Short film
“A short about a guy slowly going insane from the unending dirty kitchen dishes”.
This is a film where I basically act like an a-hole because I got obsessed with keeping my Sydney share-house's kitchen clean. Whoever it was that wasn't doing their dishes - not sorry. To everyone else - very sorry.
